Bäckerhaus Veit, meaning the "Veit house of fine bakers", opened its first bakery in Germany in 1927. Since then, this small, family owned bakery has grown into a multi-million dollar company with over seventy-five locations in Germany. In 1987, Sabine Veit, the granddaughter of the founder, brought the family's long history of excellence in bread making to North America, with the opening of a bakery in Toronto, Canada.
Growing the business in Canada came naturally to Sabine and Bäckerhaus Veit quickly built a reputation for consistently producing quality signature European breads, rolls and pretzels.
Customer demand for Bäckerhaus Veit's quality artisan breads soon outgrew capacity and Sabine's dream of reaching a wider customer base rapidly became a reality. In 1993 a 52,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility was opened in Woodbridge, Ontario. The new bakery successfully blends the quality and tradition of Veit family recipes with the efficiency and consistency facilitated by today's European baking technology.
The Bäckerhaus team of European trained Master Bakers oversees the production lines and the ongoing Research and Development program. The skill that Master Bakers bring to bread making, combined with the use of advanced technology and commitment to customer satisfaction, allows Bäckerhaus Veit the flexibility needed to produce a wide range bread flavours and formats.
With three generations of German bread making experience, Bäckerhaus Veit's European trained Master Bakers still use natural sourdoughs and only the finest natural ingredients. All seeds and grains are sorted and soaked for up to six hours to allow for maximum nutritional benefit. Our dough is given the time and temperature needed to develop before it is patiently hand shaped and baked in authentic hearth ovens.
Sabine Veit is the steward of over 100 Bäckerhaus Veit recipes that have been used within the Veit family for decades. These traditional recipes, used today at the Bäckerhaus Veit bakery, have endured over 75 years of changes in consumer preferences and customer needs.
